Circuit de la Sarthe is a legendary test of outright speed and aerodynamic efficiency, demanding precision through its high-speed sequences and brutal braking zones.

Setup Focus

  • Aerodynamics: High downforce for the technical sections, but a balance to maintain top speed on the straights.
  • Braking System: Excellent braking performance and stability under heavy deceleration.
  • Suspension: A stable and predictable suspension setup that can handle high-speed compressions and offer good traction out of slow corners.

Corner Analysis

4 corners
1

Start/Finish Straight to Dunlop Chicane

High-speed braking zone into a tight right-left chicane

Gear Downshift to 3rd or 2nd gear

Start/Finish Straight to Dunlop Chicane

VIDEO COMING SOON

Technique

Brake as late as possible on the main straight, aiming for the braking marker. Trail brake into the right-hander, then immediately turn left, being careful not to hit the kerbs too aggressively on exit. The chicane is designed to slow cars down significantly for the following section.

Apex Strategy

Late apex on the right-hander, then clip the inside kerb on the left-hander.

2

Porsche Curves

Fast, flowing, and undulating left-hand sequence

Gear 4th-5th gear

Porsche Curves

VIDEO COMING SOON

Technique

This is a crucial section for maintaining momentum. Enter with a good entry speed, progressively turn left through the series of curves, keeping the car balanced. Avoid abrupt steering inputs. Use the full width of the track where possible, but be mindful of the barriers.

Apex Strategy

Focus on a smooth, consistent line through the sequence, aiming to carry as much speed as possible. There isn't a single sharp apex, but rather a flowing line.

3

Indianapolis and Arnage Corner

Indianapolis: fast right-hander; Arnage: very tight hairpin right-hander

Gear Indianapolis: Downshift to 3rd; Arnage: Downshift to 1st or 2nd

Indianapolis and Arnage Corner

VIDEO COMING SOON

Technique

Indianapolis requires a very late braking point and a precise turn-in to carry speed through the fast right-hander. Arnage is a significant speed reduction. Brake hard and early, turn in sharply, and get on the power as early as possible on the exit, being mindful of the tight radius.

Apex Strategy

Indianapolis: Late apex; Arnage: Late apex, hugging the inside kerb.

4

Mulsanne Straight

Very long, mostly flat straight with a slight kink

Gear Top gear

Mulsanne Straight

VIDEO COMING SOON

Technique

This is where top speed is paramount. Focus on aerodynamic efficiency and stability. Ensure the car is straight before braking for the end of the straight. Be aware of other cars and potential slipstreaming.

Apex Strategy

Not applicable, focus on maintaining a straight line and maximizing acceleration.

Critical Risks

Common mistakes at this circuit

  • High speeds on the Mulsanne Straight and through Porsche Curves can lead to severe accidents if control is lost.
  • The tight hairpin at Arnage requires significant braking and can be a bottleneck, leading to contact.
  • The Dunlop Chicane is a notorious accident spot due to the drastic speed change and tight corners.
  • Variable grip levels can be present, especially if rain is involved, making high-speed sections treacherous.
