The Red Bull Ring presents a challenging blend of elevation changes and technical sequences. Mastering its short straights and critical braking zones is paramount for optimal lap times.

Setup Focus

  • Brake balance: Slightly forward bias to help with stability under heavy braking.
  • Aerodynamics: Moderate downforce to provide stability through the faster sections and under braking.
  • Suspension: A balanced setup with good responsiveness for quick direction changes, but not overly stiff to maintain grip on the bumpy sections.

Corner Analysis

3 corners
1

Turn 1-2 Complex (Remus & Rothmans)

Heavy braking zone into a sharp right-hander followed by a quick left-hander

Gear Downshift to 2nd for Turn 1, 3rd for Turn 2.

Turn 1-2 Complex (Remus & Rothmans)

VIDEO COMING SOON

Technique

Brake hard and late for Turn 1, aiming for a late apex to carry momentum through the left-hand Turn 2. Trail brake into Turn 1 to help rotate the car, then get on the power early for Turn 2, being mindful of track limits.

Apex Strategy

Late apex on Turn 1, clipping the inside kerb. Aim for a mid-apex on Turn 2 to maximize exit speed.

2

Turn 3-4 (Hella-Pag)

Uphill right-hander followed by a downhill left-hander

Gear 3rd gear for both corners.

Turn 3-4 (Hella-Pag)

VIDEO COMING SOON

Technique

Maintain a consistent line through the uphill Turn 3, looking to get a good run onto the short straight. For Turn 4, brake firmly and carry good speed, being aware of the downhill gradient which can unsettle the car. The key is smooth inputs.

Apex Strategy

Mid-apex on Turn 3, aiming to be towards the outside on exit. Mid-apex on Turn 4, focusing on a clean exit.

3

Turn 8-9 (Castrol Edge)

Double apex right-hander

Gear Downshift to 3rd for Turn 8, stay in 3rd or briefly shift to 4th depending on car speed for Turn 9.

Turn 8-9 (Castrol Edge)

VIDEO COMING SOON

Technique

This is a crucial section for lap time. Brake before Turn 8, taking a wider entry to hit the first apex. Short shift or short coast through the middle to set up for the second, tighter apex of Turn 9. Get on the power as early as possible, but be smooth to avoid wheelspin on the exit.

Apex Strategy

Wide entry, mid-apex for Turn 8. Mid-apex for Turn 9, focusing on a clean exit towards the main straight.

Critical Risks

Common mistakes at this circuit

  • ⚠ Braking zones are very short and steep downhill into some corners, increasing the risk of locking up or overshooting.
  • ⚠ The fast, sweeping nature of some corners can lead to snap oversteer if throttle application is too aggressive on corner exit.
  • ⚠ Track limits are strictly enforced, especially on the exit of Turn 1 and Turn 9.
