The 24 Heures Du Mans is an iconic high-speed endurance circuit, demanding precision and commitment across its 13.6km layout. It features extreme braking zones, flat-out straights, and highly technical flowing corner sequences.

Setup Focus

  • Aerodynamics: A balanced setup is essential, providing sufficient downforce for high-speed corners (Porsche Curves) without creating excessive drag that compromises top speed on the Mulsanne Straight.
  • Suspension: Needs to be stable under extreme heavy braking and provide good compliance over kerbs and track imperfections, particularly through the demanding Porsche Curves.
  • Brakes: High-performance, durable brakes with excellent cooling are paramount due to the extreme braking zones from very high speeds. Focus on fade resistance.
  • Engine Power & Gearing: Maximize top speed for the Mulsanne Straight while ensuring strong acceleration out of the chicanes and slower corners.

Technique

Heavy braking after the start/finish straight. Aim for a late apex on the first left to open up the right-hander. Smooth throttle application on exit to maintain momentum up the hill towards Tertre Rouge. Avoid aggressive curb use on exit to prevent instability.

Apex Strategy

Late apex on the left, early apex on the right

Tertre Rouge

Fast, Sweeping Right-Hand Corner

Gear 4th or 5th

Tertre Rouge

VIDEO COMING SOON

Technique

Absolutely critical for speed onto the Mulsanne Straight. Carry as much speed as possible, using a light lift or minimal brake tap. Turn in early and use the full width of the track on exit to maximize your run onto the straight. Smooth throttle is paramount.

Apex Strategy

Early to mid-apex, allowing for a wide exit

Technique

Extreme braking from very high speeds. For both chicanes, aim for a late apex on the first turn to open up the second part. Precision is key to avoid losing time or unsettling the car. Be gentle with throttle application on exit to prevent wheelspin.

Apex Strategy

Late apex on the first part of each chicane

Series of High-Speed Flowing Corners

Gear 4th to 6th

Porsche Curves

VIDEO COMING SOON

Technique

This section demands high commitment and precise steering. Maintain momentum through the sequence with minimal braking, mostly lifts. Focus on smooth, small steering inputs. The final right-hander (Corvette Corner) requires a bit more braking before exiting onto the straight.

Apex Strategy

Varies, generally mid-apex to maintain flow and exit speed

Critical Risks

Common mistakes at this circuit

  • High-speed incidents: Mistakes on the long straights or through the fast Porsche Curves can lead to severe crashes.
  • Tire Degradation: The high-speed nature and long lap length cause significant tire wear, especially in endurance races. Managing tire life is crucial.
  • Fuel Management: Long laps and sustained high RPMs make fuel strategy a critical component for longer events.
  • Weather Changes: Le Mans is known for unpredictable weather, particularly rain, which can drastically alter grip levels across different parts of the track.
